Read about our version release icon design and vote on the Beta icon concept!
As many of you have (hopefully) seen on our Built it! page, we’ve been keeping you up to date with our release plan for the dotmobile app. Since we are a technology company, we wanted to have releases as a way to plan the tech stack and functionality as well as discuss features openly with our members. Every release has been given a name relevant to our founding history and values: Gladstone, Periwinkle, and Gorse. Now, we have designed icons for them as well! Each icon is designed in a hand-drawn, grassroots style to represent our growth as a business.
Our web release in May of 2019 was entitled Gladstone, after a famous Toronto hotel. The Gladstone was our first HQ before there we had an official office. The West Queen West/Parkdale establishment opened its doors for anyone to co-work and have breakfast meetings in, to which we took full advantage! We spent many hours working there, had countless meetings, and felt it was an important part of how the Data on Tap vision came together.
We are currently on our Alpha release, codename: Periwinkle. Our brand’s blue colour was inspired by the periwinkle blue seen in the flower itself. However, as things go, the colour changed slightly when we were designing the UX/UI for the website. We didn’t want to change the name of the release. So we settled for not quite the blue and not quite the full launch functionality.
Finally (this is the exciting part!) our Beta release: Gorse. Named after the resilient bush flower, the gorse flower blooms through the hardships of winter and survives with brilliant yellow flowers through harsh conditions. We thought this was a fitting analogy for our start-up, and the yellow of the flowers inspired our second major brand colour. For this icon release, however, we want your vote!
Below we have three concept options for our next icons. Use the comment section below to vote for your favourite icon for our Beta release!

Why don’t you use a real picture of a flower or a tulip would be a nice shot
Hi all! Voting is now closed. Thank you for your participation, watch your inboxes for the results of your voting and the next phase of our Gorse icon!

The 1st one actually stands out!😀😀🌞

Number 3 is striking.

2 is least noisy so I would probably go with that one. It's not telling me DOT though
I choose 2. But all 3 are bad. A icon is small, so this much detail like stems and all on it is too much. Also having it detailed makes it lose the “timelessness” and the current trend is all about minimalism. So a simple but different is what you need, just like the company. You’re Simple! but different. Just what people need.
Too much going on in all 3
They're all horrible

Sorry but none of them! The Gladstone and the Periwinkle are clean/clear/decisive, these three choices are definitely not!
Sorry. None of them. What happened to Dot?

I like #2
#2 for me.
No 1 definitely.
No 1 definitely.
#1 forsure!
#1 for the win
#1 for the win!
For me it's a toss up between 1 & 3...i like the symmetry of design 1 with both lined and solid-colored petals. The design 3 the branch with the petal is a nice element! Either one'd work! I figure you're still working on this but are going to add to the line width to emphasize the icon though right and an icon shape, circle or rounded square? Looking great, amazing!!!
Number 3
#3 FOR THE WIN!!!
Numero 1
I would go with the option 3. Enough yellow and blue and the yellow does not overwhelm you unlike in the first two options. I would even make the leaf in the option 3 transparent as well.
#2 for the win!
In New Zealand the Gorse is considered an invasive plant. Here’s wishing your Gorse icon spreads like crazy in Canada. 😀. I choose image 1. Not really crazy about any of them but 1 it’s pleasantly memorable.
Number three is well balanced (the first two seem top-heavy with too much yellow).
I vote for 1.
I'm with Tim on this one... hit me with #2!
I vote 1, since it looks the most balanced to my eyes.
2 is my choice, I like simple

1 is great!
